OUR REMAINING EVENING WITH AN ARTIST EVENTS HAVE BEEN MOVED TO OUR VIRTUAL CHAT SERIES

Join us for an intimate evening with the artists who shape Chamber Dance Project’s distinctive profile. Each event in the series combines presentations, performances, and conversation with audience members. Dancers, musicians, choreographers, and designers discuss and deconstruct elements of Chamber Dance Project’s repertoire, offer insights into their professional lives and creative processes, and share previews of the company’s latest works. Afterward, a light wine-and-cheese reception brings everyone together to continue the enjoyable exploration.

MUSIC + DANCE: CHRIS ROGERSON

MOVED TO OUR VIRTUAL CHAT SERIES

Come hear Chris, an acclaimed young composer, talk about his powerful and exciting music for Claudia Schreier’s new ballet for our June season.  Chris will talk about his early training and why he was drawn to composing.  He will walk us through one movement of ballet’s score for string quartet then deconstruct it compositionally. We will watch rehearsal videos of Claudias work in the studio and discuss how he sees it.  Chris will engage the audience in an on-the-spot composition to reveal a bit of his process in composing.

LIFE OF A DANCER: GRACE-ANNE POWERS

MOVED TO OUR VIRTUAL CHAT SERIES

Featuring our new dancer, Grace-Anne will share her life as a dancer from her early training through her career through photos and videos.  She will discuss her life as a professional ballet dancer, currently with BalletMet, and discuss how she approaches the creation and performance of her roles. We will also screen videos of Grace-Anne in rehearsals as she prepares for her first season with Chamber Dance Project.

Join Bekah, our costume designer, and an exhibition of her costumes for Chamber Dance Project.  Bekah will talk about her process from concept to execution and also show her work-in-progress for guest choreographer Colin Gee for our June season.  Bekah will discuss how she came to wardrobe work for ballet and demonstrate some techniques in building costumes and maybe even have a few audience members model some!

DANCER + CHOREOGRAPHER: CHRISTIAN DENICE

Featuring our new dancer and choreographer for our 2020-21 season, Christian will share his life as a dancer and work in recent years in choreography.  He will discuss his early training through his career in photos and videos.  Having danced with Les Ballet Jazz and other major companies, Christian is now a freelance dancer and choreographer discussing that transition.  We will show rehearsal videos of Christian at work in rehearsal on new ballets as he prepares for his first season with Chamber Dance Project.

MINIATURE MINIMALISM: COLIN GEE

Join us for our first Evening with an Artist event of the season with guest choreographer Colin Gee who is in town rehearsing his new work. His minutely constructed performances comprise descriptive movement and evoke narrative and emotional states by subtle physical motions drawing from his background in Commedia Dell’arte and as a performer with with Cirque de Soleil. Colin will be creating an intricate physical work on our string quartet and dancers. Colin will share his process of creating new work and how he will arrange the musician’s movements to tell a story.

LIFE OF A DANCER: FRANCESCA DUGARTE

An audience favorite since our first season, Francesca is a choreographer’s dream – she is a true collaborator in creating new works.  She goes at all of her dancing with tremendous passion and commitment. Born in Venezuela, she has had an international career and many awards.  She was a member of The Washington Ballet and now with BalletMet in Columbus and returns to Chamber Dance Project for her fifth season.

Francesca will share her life as a dancer from her early training through her career and what the life of a professional ballet dancer is like.   She will discuss how she approaches the creation and performance of new roles including her upcoming premieres in Alejandro Cerrudo’s Extremely Close duet and her featured role in Diane Coburn Bruning’s new ballet Prufrock, both in our June season.

DUO IN STRINGS: CLAUDIA CHUDACOFF & SEAN NEIDLINGER

Come hear our outstanding quartet musicians, Claudia and Sean, in the intimacy of this historic Old Town concert hall. They will perform works including Zoltan Kodaly’s  Duo for Violin and Cello that they are preparing for our season. They as well as “deconstruct” the music in discussion with the audience for deeper hearing and understanding of the music.  Claudia, an Eastman School of Music graduate, is in her sixth season with Chamber Dance Project as our first violinist and principal musician. SONGS BY COLE: SHACARA ROGERS

Our newest musician this season is exciting young D.C. jazz singer, Shacara Rogers.  Performing since the age of five, Shacara holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in music from Howard University and is a graduate of the Kennedy Center’s Jazz Ahead program. She has received acclaim and awards throughout her career -come hear why.  Shacara will perform and discuss works she is preparing for her performances with us in Songs by Cole. She will also be performing at our March 2 Anchors Aweigh gala at the Capital Yacht Club.

VALENTINES IN STRINGS: CHAERIM & DEREK SMITH

Between them, these Chamber Dance Project musicians have performed in settings ranging from the Kennedy Center to Carnegie Hall and played and worked with artists as diverse as Pinchas Zukerman and Barry Manilow. The focus is more intimate in this pre-Valentine’s Day evening: just the two of them.

In performance and conversation, they use music to trace significant milestones in their individual careers and their life together as a performing couple. Chaerim and Derek will perform several works and “deconstruct” one of them to help audience members hear and understand the music in greater depth.  The will also give several audience members a short lesson on the violin as they discuss the technical and artistic aspects of playing.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS: DIANE COBURN BRUNING

Diane is an award-winning choreographer and Founding Artistic Director of Chamber Dance Project. Her 35-year choreographic career has spanned ballet, theatre, opera and film.  Diane will focus on the creative process in choreography in discussion and demonstration involving the audience. Come hear about the creation of her popular Songs by Cole and Chant and how she is now creating her new work, Prufrock, with the T.S. Eliot poem with theatre director, Matt Torney.  Prufrock will premiere in our June season.  Diane will also choreograph a short piece with the audience on the spot!

LIGHTING DESIGN FOR DANCE: MAJA WHITE

Maja White, our resident lighting designer for the previous five seasons will give an in-depth and personal look at the process of taking dance lighting from paper, to the rehearsal room, to the stage. Maja has been lighting professionally since 1991. She loves the moment when an image finally comes to life onstage. Come hear how Maja works directly with our choreographers and even see some of the equipment she uses to sculpt a dancer with light! Learn about Maja’s passion for her work and how lighting enhances the mood and the drama of the stage. Maja will involve audience members in a live lighting demo on color mixing and lighting a moving body.
